Creating New Opportunities

My Definition: Placing myself outside my comfort zone in order to allow future opportunities to open up steps ahead of the next opportunity; An emphasis on treating every relationship as a long-term relationship.

My Criteria: Creating new opportunities is all about thinking steps in advance.  On the contrary, ceasing opportunities focuses at the opportunities present at-hand.  Openmindedness as well as sustainable drive is needed in order to excel as a creator of opportunities.

Reflection: Case Interviews

The Mays Communication Lab offers a variety of consultations for students, such as behavioral interviewing, portfolio development, memo writing, and presentations. One of the newer consultation services at the Comm Lab is case interviewing that was started by two of my former c0-workers, Scott and Christina.

Case interviews had significantly increased in popularity during my first year working at the Comm Lab. However, in the spring of 2016, Scott was set to graduate, and the Comm Lab was needing a few consultants to be trained in delivering case interviews in order to keep up with demand. Initially, I raised my hand to be trained just because I thought it would really help the Comm Lab out. However, as Scott and Christina started to train me, I began to gain a genuine intrigue for consulting and general business strategy.

After a year of conducting case interviews for a variety of clients, I decided to apply for a few consulting firms for full-time positions after graduation. As a student in the Professional Program in Accounting, it's not often students start their career in anything other than public accounting, but there was one consulting firm that I felt was a great fit for me. Preparing for the case interview of this firm, I remember doing mock interviews and practicing with many of our case interview resources at the Comm Lab. I was able to make it to the final group case interview in Houston, but unfortunately, didn't land the job.

Although I failed at getting the job with the consulting firm, I have found the whole case interview process to be refreshing, and I look forward to being a lead decision maker for a company at some point in my career.

Reflection: LINC

In order to create a new opportunity, first I had to establish my passions so that if an opportunity were to arise based off of those passions, I wouldn't risk the chance of missing out.  After freshman year, I determined that I had a deep passion for mentorship and facilitating reflective discussion.  Well early on in the spring semester of 2015, I was introduced to the LINC conference.  This conference would allow me to engage both of these passions as I had the chance to lead a small group for high school seniors looking to learn more about Mays Business School and what it has to offer.  Throughout the two day conference, I was intrigued by the insightful talks I was having with the seniors in my small group and how they paid significant attention to whatever I said and did.  By pursuing this opportunity, not only did I make an impact on their lives, but also I was able to self-develop and grow an even bigger network with peers who shared a similar passion with me.  I have high hopes that I'll connect with them, again to extend the reach of Mays even further these next years.

The following link is from Marc P. Cosentino's Case in Point. It outlines his "12 Case Scenarios" that I routinely studied while preparing for case interviews:
